In the Veneto region, sweet-potato growing takes place on vast expanses of land in the provinces of Treviso, Padua and Venice in an area straddled by the Brenta river and falling between the provinces of Padua and Rovigo. More than half of the sweet potatoes grown in Italy comes from the Veneto region.
Known incorrectly in the USA as a yam, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a powerhouse of nutrients that keep us strong and healthy. Recently, the CSPI (Center of Science in the Public Interest) placed the sweet potato high up in the rankings of healthy vegetables.
As a foodstuff, it brings down stress levels, increases stamina, induces a state of relaxation and serenity and makes us feel full too. It also contains large amounts of antioxidants, has a positive effect on the immune system and helps to prevent heart diseases.
