The area in the Veneto region which is particularly specialised in salad growing is Lusia in the province of Rovigo. The humus which has come to settle over time on the sandy soil is especially suitable for vegetable crops.

A dense network of irrigation channels means that the top groundwater is kept constantly at one metre below the surface. This is extremely important because it means crops are available throughout the seasons.

In 2009, the Capuccia (Butterhead) and Gentile (oak-leaf) salads received a European PGI award for their superior quality. All PGI salads must comply with a series of characteristics and values established under strict crop-management regulations.
